Townsville is the largest city in North Queensland and is one of the fastest growing cities in the state, with a population exceeding 170,000. Located roughly halfway between Brisbane and the tip of Cape York, Townsville is nestled on the shores of Cleveland Bay, alongside the Great Barrier Reef.

The Australian Festival of Chamber Music is an international chamber music festival held over ten days each July in Townsville.
The region has many renowned festivals. The Annual Greek and Italian Festivals are popular with the locals and tourists alike. The Townsville South Hotel and restaurant strip hosts an annual Palmer Street Jazz Festival, as does nearby Magnetic Island (The Great Tropical Jazz Party). The Stable on the Strand is celebrated each Christmas.
